Nelson created a frame in spheroid shape by inserting perforated rings with steel wires. Then he put the construction under tension to give it the desired shape. This approach required few tools and did not create welding costs. Subsequently, the construction was sprayed with the resinous varnish, whereupon a fibrous fabric was formed. Then a last plastic layer was applied, creating a smooth, translucent shell. With this design, Nelson expanded his ever-expanding work portfolio to include lighting fixtures and, in 1952, launched a beautiful, timeless lighting family at moderate prices.
